From ODU art education student to Hampton Roads teacher, Camille is helping carry forward Melinda's belief in the power of art to inspire creativity, confidence and connection.

The Melinda M. Vooss Artfully Yours Memorial Fund is proud to recognize Camille Brown, the third recipient of the Melinda Vooss Art Education Scholarship at Old Dominion University (ODU).

Awarded in January 2026, the $1,500 scholarship supported Camille during her final semester of student teaching as she prepared to begin her career as an art educator. Today, she is putting that education and experience into practice as an elementary art teacher at three Norfolk Public Schools.

Now in her first semester of teaching, Camille is discovering both the challenges and rewards of working with students across different school environments. Her experiences are reinforcing the importance of flexibility, understanding each student's individual needs and creating opportunities for young artists to explore their interests and express themselves.

For our foundation, supporting aspiring art educators like Camille is one of the most meaningful ways we can honor Melinda's legacy. It is an investment not only in a new teacher but also in the many students whose lives she will influence.

A Shared Passion for Creativity and Student Expression

A graduate of ODU's Art Education program, Camille brings a thoughtful, student-centered philosophy to teaching. She believes art education should encourage curiosity, experimentation and creative risk-taking while helping students develop confidence in their ideas and abilities.

Her philosophy emphasizes creating an inclusive classroom where students feel comfortable exploring different materials, learning from mistakes and expressing their individual perspectives.

As Camille explains in her teaching portfolio:

"My goal is to help students see art not only as a means of expression but as a tool for understanding themselves, connecting with others, and engaging with the world around them."

Those words reflect so much of what Melinda believed as an educator.

Throughout her 18-year teaching career, Melinda encouraged students to embrace their individuality, explore their creativity and take pride in their accomplishments. She understood that art could open doors to self-discovery, build confidence and create meaningful connections.

Seeing those same values reflected in Camille's teaching philosophy is a wonderful reminder of why our foundation is committed to supporting the next generation of art educators.

Supporting the Next Generation of Art Educators

Reflecting on receiving the scholarship, Camille shared:

"Receiving this scholarship means a lot to me as I continue working toward becoming an art educator. It’s encouraging to feel supported in a field that values creativity, growth, and student expression. I’m especially grateful for organizations like the Melinda Vooss Artfully Yours Memorial Fund that recognize and support preservice teachers and our commitment to art education. This opportunity motivates me to keep growing as both an artist and a teacher while creating meaningful, engaging experiences for my future students."

Established in partnership with ODU, the Melinda Vooss Art Education Scholarship provides financial support to art education seniors during their student-teaching semester, recognizing their dedication, artistic achievements and commitment to inspiring young learners.

With Camille joining our previous scholarship recipients, we are proud to see this program continuing to support talented educators as they transition from the university classroom into their own teaching careers.

Growing as an Educator Through YASS

Camille's connection to the foundation extends beyond the scholarship.

As an ODU student, she also participated in the Young Artist Studio Series (YASS), a community arts education program proudly supported by the Artfully Yours Memorial Fund.

Through YASS, Camille collaborated with another student teacher to develop and lead workshops exploring cyanotype printing, photography and self-portrait collages. The experience gave young artists opportunities to experiment with different techniques, express their identities and share their creations with family and friends.

For Camille, it was also an opportunity to develop her own teaching skills, build relationships with students and experience firsthand how art can foster personal growth and community.

This connection is particularly meaningful to our foundation. Through programs like YASS and the ODU scholarship, we are able to support aspiring educators at different stages of their development while helping bring creative opportunities to young people throughout Hampton Roads.

Carrying Melinda's Legacy Forward

What makes this scholarship especially meaningful is the impact that extends far beyond the award itself.

Every new art educator has the opportunity to encourage creativity, help students discover their strengths and create a classroom where young people feel valued and inspired.

That was central to Melinda's teaching philosophy, and it remains at the heart of our foundation's mission.

We congratulate Camille on receiving the scholarship and beginning this exciting new chapter in her teaching career. We look forward to seeing the creativity, confidence and connections she inspires in her students for years to come.
