Celebrating Creativity and Community at the 4th Annual Melinda Vooss Creative Arts Festival
Chesapeake Bay Academy's annual celebration brings students, families and educators together through art, self-expression and a shared sense of belonging.

On April 23, 2026, Chesapeake Bay Academy (CBA) came alive with creativity as students, families, teachers and friends gathered for the 4th Annual Melinda Vooss Creative Arts Festival. From colorful artwork and imaginative projects to musical performances and collaborative displays, the afternoon was a wonderful celebration of the talent, individuality and creative spirit of CBA's students.
This year's theme, I Am CBA, reflected the values at the heart of the school community: Care for others, Believe in ourselves and Appreciate the world around us. Throughout the festival, those values were on full display, reminding everyone that art is not only a means of creative expression but also a powerful way to build connections and foster a sense of belonging.
A Celebration of Creativity in Every Form
The festival showcased an inspiring range of student work across the visual and performing arts, STEAM and makerspace programs. Each project offered a different perspective on creativity and the many ways students explore ideas, express themselves and collaborate with others.
Art exhibits included mixed-media treehouses, collaborative sculptures, ceramic creations and projects exploring identity, history and community. Students also brought their ingenuity to STEAM and makerspace activities, creating everything from tabletop roller coasters and LEGO inventions to 3D-printed designs and imaginative dioramas.
Several collaborative projects brought the festival's theme to life in especially meaningful ways. A community tree mural, created with local muralist Sarah Richards, represented growth, connection and the individual voices that make up CBA. Other projects explored unity and shared expression, demonstrating how art can bring people together around ideas and experiences.
The performing arts were equally memorable. The CBA Choir, Middle School Drum Ensemble, student musicians and an original poetry performance filled the afternoon with music and expression, adding another dimension to the celebration.
But perhaps the most rewarding moments came from seeing students proudly standing beside their creations, sharing their ideas and accomplishments with family, friends and teachers. Their excitement and sense of pride were reminders of why opportunities like this matter.
Honoring Melinda's Legacy Through Art
For the Melinda M. Vooss Artfully Yours Memorial Fund, the festival holds a particularly special meaning.
Melinda was a passionate educator at Chesapeake Bay Academy who believed deeply in the creativity, curiosity and potential of every student. She understood that art could help young people discover their strengths, develop confidence and connect with the world around them.
That belief continues to inspire the foundation's mission and its partnership with CBA.
During the festival's opening remarks, Scott Vooss reflected on the importance of art in creating connections:
"When these students stand on stage and share their work, they are sharing a part of themselves. And when we take the time to look, listen, and respond, we connect."
The festival also featured a special display honoring Melinda through artwork created during previous celebrations. Original pieces by artist Eric Worden from the 2024 festival included a guitar decorated with artistic references and qualities that represented Melinda. A poetry display also revisited To Honor Her Bold Walk, an original poem written by CBA teacher and poet Synnika Lofton for the inaugural festival.
These works were touching reminders that Melinda's influence continues to inspire creativity and connection within the CBA community.
A Special Thank You to Dr. Judy Jonkowski
This year's celebration also provided an opportunity to recognize Dr. Judy Jonkowski as she prepared to retire from her leadership role at Chesapeake Bay Academy.
From the beginning, Dr. Jonkowski has been instrumental in helping establish the Creative Arts Festival and nurturing its growth into an annual tradition. Her vision, compassion and commitment to the students and families of CBA have helped create an environment where creativity is celebrated and every student has an opportunity to shine.
The Vooss family and the Artfully Yours Memorial Fund are deeply grateful for her leadership, her friendship and the meaningful role she has played in ensuring Melinda's legacy remains part of the CBA community.
Continuing a Meaningful Tradition
Four years after its beginning, the Melinda Vooss Creative Arts Festival continues to demonstrate the extraordinary things that happen when students are encouraged to explore their creativity and share their voices.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the CBA leadership team, teachers, staff, students and families who made this year's festival so memorable. Their dedication and enthusiasm are what make this celebration such a special tradition.
Most importantly, the festival reflects something Melinda believed throughout her life: art has the power to inspire confidence, spark curiosity and bring people together.
And seeing that belief come to life through the students of Chesapeake Bay Academy is a beautiful way to continue her legacy.
